There was one goal the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team had on their mind Thursday in Park Rapids and that was to win the Mid-State Conference championship.

As it happened, the Lakers did put their minds and swings to it and came away with their first Mid-State championship since 2008.

“We’ve now had enough practice after the late start to the season and we have been able to work on every aspect of the game,” said DL head coach Patrick Starbeck. “The guys really wanted to win the conference and they went out and did it.”

The Lakers placed no lower than third in all their matches, with three singles and a doubles team taking first.

DL captured singles’ titles two through four, with Alex Fondrick, Carlos Espinosa and Caleb Howard winning their respective divisions.

A big victory came at No. 3 doubles, as Luke Eggebraaten and Colton Friesen played above their three seed to win all three of their matches.

“That was big, because I thought they might finish third,” Starbeck said.

Isaac Fondrick just missed a conference title at No. 1 singles by falling in the championship match, while doubles teams one and two each finished third.

Chandler Hanks and Austin Nelson finished with bronze at No. 1 doubles, while Dylan Bremseth and Brady Crawford were third at No. 2 doubles.

The team will go back to their original spots, with the Fondrick brothers playing No. 1 doubles, where they are undefeated on the season.

“They have a chance of getting the No. 1 seed in the section, but also have a good chance of being No. 2, as well,” Starbeck said.

The Lakers will play in Park Rapids Monday and host a triangular Thursday with Alexandria and Thief River Falls.
