Lakers will be very young, but seasoned
There could be some sneaking up on opponents this season for the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team.
On paper, it may look like a rebuilding year, with no seniors or juniors on the team.
But there is experience and talent nonetheless.
"I think there is a lot of potential on the team," said DL head coach Jen Hendrickson. "It may look like a rebuilding type of year, but I think we'll be pretty competitive."
The Lakers do have some seasoning back in eighth graders Maddie Tschider (who missed state last year by three strokes) and Trisa Hutchinson, along with sophomores Courtney Hedstrom and Ashley Friesen.
Others who will be vying for starting spots include eighth graders Natalie Roth and Emma Thompson and seventh grader Sidney Busker.
"We have a huge number of middle school golfers (30) out too," Hendrickson added. "Age-wise, we are very young, but they do have some experience and I'm impressed with how much they went out and played last summer."
With very little pressure on the team, Hendrickson wants to see improvement, but also wants the girls to have fun at meets and enjoy the season.
"The girls are not feeling the pressure, but they are excited and still want to be competitive in the tournaments," the DL coach said. "There will be some good opportunities for them against some good competition.
"The fire is still in them."
The Lakers will host their invite at the Detroit Country Club May 25, while the Sub-Section meet is May 27 at Wildflower.
The Section 8-2A meet will be held at Longbow Golf Course in Walker, June 1, while the state event is in Jordan, June 16-17.
