Lakers win battle of Mid-State champs
The showdown between the co-Mid-State champions was as close as it was during the conference meet last weekend, as the Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team survived Staples-Motley 5-2 Tuesday.
The dual featured four matches which were decided in three sets, with the Lakers going 3-1 in them to tip the scales.
"We played extremely well today," said DL head coach Wade Johnson. "Staples-Motley is an outstanding young team. The match could have gone either way."
Senior Thieris Galdino rebounded nicely in his No. 2 singles match after falling to sophomore Guthrie Coughlin 6-2 in the first set.
Galdino rallied to win the second set 6-4 and the decisive third 6-3.
"Thieris dug deep to get a big win for us at No. 2 singles and Isaac Fondrick came through for us, as well," Johnson said.
Fondrick also went three sets, winning the first 7-5, losing the second 6-2 and taking the third 6-2.
Senior Tanner Duncan won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 over S-M sophomore Matt Spar to give the Lakers a 3-1 edge in singles play.
The Cardinals swept singles play during the Mid-State meet last Friday, while the Lakers took all three doubles titles.
CJ Hanson and Jesse Meyer outlasted Derek Wolhowe and Anthony Duhn at No. 1 doubles, winning the final set 7-5 after the two teams exchanged a pair of 6-1 scores.
At No. 3 doubles, Garret Duncan and Derick Brehm downed Grant Longbella and Dale Vogt 6-0, 6-1.
The Lakers will face Perham on the road Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start, before entering Section 8-2A play starting Tuesday, May 25.
