A barrage of three-pointers broke open a close game and led Detroit Lakes to a 75-56 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids girls basketball team Friday night at the Area High School gym.

The Lakers led 27-20 with 1:27 to play in the first half before eight 3-pointers sparked a 31-13 run that pushed the lead to 58-33 with 9:32 remaining as Detroit Lakes remained undefeated in conference play.

Three-pointers by Charity Ridlon and Katie Klein gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead with 12:57 to play in the first half before Detroit Lakes responded with a 10-1 run to take the lead for good. Kyley Foster’s two long jumpers gave the Lakers a 16-9 advantage at the 8:17 mark.

Park Rapids responded with a jumper by Ridlon and a basket off a rebound by Gabie Johnson to cut the gap to 16-13 at the 6:47 mark before two baskets by Trisa Hutchinson and a basket off a rebound by Shay Nielsen gave the Lakers a 27-13 lead with 3:41 to go in the first half.

A three-pointer by Ridlon, a basket off a rebound by Megan Grimes and a jumper by Bria Wolff pulled the Panthers to within 27-20 with 1:27 remaining before a basket off a rebound by Hutchinson and back-to-back 3-pointers by Foster in the final 1:11 gave Detroit Lakes a 35-20 lead at the half.

Four different players hit 3-pointers at the start of the second half as the Lakers took control. Hailey Jorgenson continued the 3-point barrage at the 17:11 mark for a 39-22 lead while Hutchinson and Grace Swenson followed with three-pointers as the Lakers led 45-26 at the 15:49 mark.

Kyra Vagle hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 51-28 lead with 13:00 to play before Jorgenson hit another 3-pointer as Detroit Lakes led 58-33 with 9:32 remaining. 

Johnson’s two inside baskets and jumpers by Wolff and Ridlon and a 3-pointer by Klein led the Panthers during that stretch.

Ridlon’s 3-pointer, two baskets by Klein, and jumpers by Ridlon and Wolff closed the gap to 65-46 with 5:37 to play.

The Lakers pushed the lead to 70-46 before the Panthers closed the game with a 10-5 run behind a pair of 3-pointers by Hope Johnson, a layup by Ridlon and a layup off a steal by Megan Olson.

Hutchinson scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack for the Lakers, who improved to 2-0 in conference play and 2-3 overall. Nielsen (14), Foster (13) and Vagle (10) also scored in double figures.

Ridlon finished with 17 points and Hope Johnson added 13 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-4 in conference play and 1-4 overall.
