With summer finally here, there are endless possibilities when it comes to fresh produce and how to serve them up.

"It's like a cook's heaven," Sue Doeden said. Doeden writes a column each week for Forum Communications newspapers, along with a blog, creates recipes and teaches culinary classes.

She will be giving a cooking demonstration Saturday, July 9, at the Lakes Area Farmers Market in Peoples Park in Detroit Lakes.

"When you can just go to the farmers market and find all this beautiful, fresh produce," she said about enjoying summer cooking. "Not only that, but you know where it came from and can ask the farmer how it was grown. It's just wonderful. I love this time of the year, and it's just way too short for me."

Doeden did a cooking demonstration earlier this summer in Bemidji, but since there wasn't as much fresh produce available, she focused more on herbs.

About a week or so before she gives a demonstration at the farmers market, Doeden will find out what the farmers have available at the market and then plan her menu. She'll have at least lettuce, spinach, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, organic beef, pork and lamb and more available.

Doeden said she has some ideas of what she'll make for the Detroit Lakes demonstration, including possibly Mediterranean-style spinach.

"I just love it, and we eat it a lot during the summer," she said.

She said a stir-fry filled with fresh veggies is another possibility.

"I just try and use as much as I can from the farmers market that day and highlight some really tasty, helpful dishes," she said.

Doeden will also be able to hold the demonstration in the newly built kitchen across the street near the ice skating rink.

Doeden will bring recipes for what she cooks so people can take them home and practice themselves.

"I also like to take those ingredients that maybe people aren't as familiar with and show them how easy it is to cook and how tasty it can be."

Doeden started cooking at a young age, helping her mother and grandmother in the kitchen.

She started clipping recipes and reading cookbooks at age 9, and enjoys getting her family in the kitchen to help her prepare food and then enjoy the meals around the table together.

Doeden's blog can be found at sdoeden.areavoices.com, and her cooking column runs in the Wednesday Detroit Lakes Tribune.

The food demonstration is Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. in Peoples Park, located behind Zorbaz. The farmers market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
