Lakes area’s fall calendar is full of exciting events
Though Detroit Lakes is perhaps best known for its many activities during the summer months, the fall and winter are also full of exciting events that the whole family can enjoy.
Included are just a few of the many opportunities to enjoy abundant community events and the gorgeous scenery of the lakes area.
Support the DL Lions at the third annual Harvest Moon Ball on Friday, Sept. 13.
The fun-filled evening kicks off at 6 p.m. in the Pavilion, followed by dinner, dancing and a performance from Doc and the Scrubs. Tickets can be purchased from any Lions Club member.
Enjoy the beauty of the lakes area as the leaves begin to turn with the Fall Color Tour, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Sept. 26.
On Sept. 28, experience the thrill of the Viking Waterway Tour: Wynland of the West, on some of Minnesota’s rivers and lakes.
The Kensington Rune Stone recorded the death of 10 men near the mooring stone on modern day Big Cormorant Lake. Lunch and snacks will be provided throughout the day, and the bus loads at 8 am at the Chamber parking lot.
Stretch out your legs for the third annual Walk for DL Area Let’s Go Fishing Program. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, with registration at 9 a.m. Walkers will start from the Pavilion at 10 a.m., heading through City Park and the beach area. After the walk, enjoy some chili at the awards program.
Throughout the season, check out the hiking opportunities offered on the North Country Trail.
If the paranormal piques your interest, visit the 3rd annual Paranormal Convention: Paracon 2013 on Thursday, Oct. 10, through Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Shooting Star Casino.

A local landmark is celebrating an important birthday this year. Join the Detroit Lakes Public Library in marking 100 years in the Centennial Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 13. New York Times best-selling author and Minnesota native William Kent Kruger will be in attendance, and the free event kicks off at 7 p.m.
Get yourself in a festive spirit for the upcoming winter holidays on Nov. 23 at the Holiday Bazaar. Plan ahead and buy some early gifts in Washington Square Mall.
