Larry Engen

Larry N. Engen, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 in his residence.

Larry N. Engen was born to Herbran (Bob) and Gilma (Heier) Engen on Nov. 29, 1947 in Hawley. As a young boy, he moved to Detroit Lakes, where he received his education, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1965. He married Ruth E. Coughlin on Sept. 5, 1969 in Detroit Lakes.

Over the years, Larry worked at Gasport and also Lakes Ford in Detroit Lakes. He then started his career driving truck. He hauled the U.S. Mail, petroleum, turkeys, and chickens. He was also an agent for Midwest Motor Express for many years. Most recently he and his sons owned and operated Detroit Lakes Express and Engen Enterprises.

Larry was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. He was also a member of the Smokey Hills Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. He loved driving truck, cruising in his newly restored "64 Chevrolet Impala SS," collecting toy trucks, hunting, four wheeling, and camping. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving Larry are his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Kari Ann (John) Syvertson of Fargo; two sons, Wade (Linda) Engen and Bradley Engen, both of Detroit Lakes; four grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald (Gloria) Engen of Silverdale, Wash., and Merlin Engen of Detroit Lakes; a sister, Arlene Hedlund of Detroit Lakes; two brothers-in-law, Maurice (Betty) Coughlin of Moose Lake, Minn., and Rod (Jane) Coughlin of Surprise, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Ann (Duane) Glander of Detroit Lakes and Carolyn (Bob) Eilertson of Audubon; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Glenn Engen; and one nephew, Jeff Engen.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 12, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13 at Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Eric Lemonholm officiating.

Casket bearers will be Todd Glander, Tony Glander, Chad Glander, Dan Eilertson, David Eilertson and Cory Coughlin. Honorary bearers will be Gerald Engen, Merlin Engen, Rod Coughlin, Maurice Coughlin, Duane Glander and Bob Eilertson.
