Larry "Butch" Lee Pachel, 58, of Park Rapids, died suddenly on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Junction City, Kansas.
Butch was born the son of George J. and Pauline R. (Bennett) Pachel on June 19, 1951 in Park Rapids, where he grew up and attended school. He was united in marriage to Barbara A. Clements on June 12, 1971 in Snellman, Minn. They lived in Minneapolis for a short time before moving to a farm in Osage Township, where they continued to reside until the time of his death.
Butch worked in the Twin Cities in various jobs including sewer and water construction, bridge and road construction, and as an equipment operator. He then worked locally for Traut Wells of Park Rapids. For 15 years he was a selfemployed, independent long haul truck operator, logging over a million miles without an accident. He worked locally as a logger for three years and for six years operated his own heavy equipment repair shop.
Since 2004 Larry has been an independent contractor, refitting and fabricating armor systems for the U.S. Army's Bradley Fighting Vehicle. He was a certified welder under contract with BAE Systems Company, working throughout the United States, Germany and Korea. His last assignment was upgrading equipment for the 1st Brigade of 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Butch was a member of the 49ers Union, the NRA, Tractor Club, and the Osage Sportsman Club. He enjoyed hunting, working hard, and western books and movies. He has a fondness for Fords and Peterbuilts. He will be remembered as a master fabricator, a talented welder and for being a perfectionist. He was a good friend and mentor. He held a great adoration for his grandchildren.
Surviving Butch are his loving wife, Barbara A. Pachel of Park Rapids; his three children, Michael (Paula) Pachel of Pine Bluff, Wyo., Jason (Brenda) Pachel of Thief River Falls and Amanda (Craig) Lawrey of Menahga; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Pauline R. Pachel of Park Rapids; his brothers and sisters, Lynette, Charlete, Leo, Robert, Edward, Shirley and Mary; as well as everal nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his father and a special cousin, James Pachel.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman. Officiant was Pastor Eddie Hosch. Active casketbearers were Terry Tretbar, John Mack, Larry Weiss, Mike Thielen, Tim Clements, Kyle Pachel. Interment was held at the Snellman Cemetery at Snellman.
