"We just want to compete and have fun," said head coach Robb Flint. "That's exactly what we did tonight and it got us the win."

The game was a lot closer than the 75-65 score showed, with the largest lead being five by the Wolverines.

"We came out and played defense a little smarter," Flint said. "Our help side was a lot better in the second (half)."

Being smarter is what ignited the 20-6 run in the final five minutes, as W-DC's Cole Lugert committed a costly technical foul that sent senior Reed Oistad to the line.

The Lakers were also aided in some solid rebounding by senior Kyle Muckenhirn.

"It was easy to get separation because the refs were calling everything," said Muckenhirn.

Rebounding led to multiple scoring chances for the Lakers most of whom were capitalized on by sophomore Josh Stalberger-- who scored 10 of his 15 points in the final two minutes.

"Any time you get a rebound you get a chance to push the ball and score," said Flint. "We just want guys to step up and score."

The student section came alive and made some deafening noise with three minutes and it appeared to give the boys some energy.

"The student section got really fired up," said Muckenhirn. "That's what fueled our rally."

Free throws were what sealed the game for the Lakers as they shot 71-percent from the line versus the Wolverines' 52-percent.

"We enter every game with the mentality to go as hard as we can," Muckenhirn said. "That's really what did it for us tonight -- our effort."

The boys' effort not only helped the scoring but limited their turnovers.

"We'll take 14 any day," said Flint of his team's turnovers. "We're averaging 24 a game and that's a result of the fast game style we play."

The Lakers will be hosting section foe Thief River Falls on Thursday at 7:30.
