Late rally propels Fergus Falls past Detroit Lakes
A few late crucial shots were all that separated the Detroit Lakes and visiting Fergus Falls girls' basketball teams Saturday night in Ralph Anderson Gym.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, their first win was not to be, as the Otters pulled off those crucial shots late in the game to win 57-50.
"The girls battled hard," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "The team is improving, but we still have lots to improve on."
Despite wearing a mask to protect her broken nose, forward Kayli Muckenhirn led DL in scoring with 17 points, while guard Rachel Shane and Courtney Gray each contributed 10.
The game was close throughout, with no more than a two to four-point gap separating the two teams up to the final few minutes of the contest.
But Fergus Falls' Anna and Mariah Monke took turns netting points in each half to keep the Otters above water.
Anna Monke netted nine of her team-high 15 points in the first half, while Mariah Monke scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half.
Sydney Schultz did her damage from beyond the three-point mark, scoring all her nine points on three's.
The Lakers (0-5) will host Pequot Lakes (4-1) Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
That will be the last game before DL travels to the Sartell Holiday Tournament, starting Dec. 29, where the team opens against Princeton for a 6 p.m. start.
Fergus Falls at Detroit Lakes, Saturday, Dec. 12.
