Laurel H. "Ozzie" Aasgaard, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospi-tal in Detroit Lakes.
Laurel Hanfred Aasgaard was born to Lawrence and Hannah (Albertson) Aasgaard on March 26, 1927 near Flom. He grew up near Flom and attended the Home Lake District 44 Country School. He graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1945. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II, and later in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On August 15, 1951 he was united in marriage to Jeanniane Thorson at Aspelund Lutheran Church in Flom. Ozzie worked as a radio techni-cian for the Minnesota State Highway Patrol and the Minnesota Depart-ment of Transportation in Virginia, Minn., from 1953-1960, and from 1960-1973 in Detroit Lakes.
They lived in Duluth for one year before mov-ing to Wadena in 1975. He taught electronics at Northwest Technical Col-lege in Wadena until his retirement in 1987. They moved back to Detroit Lakes in 1989.
Ozzie was an active member at First Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was a member of the Brown Baggers. He was a life member of the VFW. He also served as a volunteer at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. He was a leader in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and also the Explorer Scout Program. He was also a ham radio operator and enjoyed col-lecting and restoring vintage radios.
Survivors include his wife Jeanniane; three sons, Stuart (Linda) Aasgaard of Boseman, Mont., Dean Aasgaard, of St. Paul and Paul (Lisbeth) Aasgaard of Fergus Falls; one daugh-ter, Jane (Jeff) Miller of Plymouth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Juliette Urdahl of Ulen; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Milton Aasgaard; and three sisters, Lorraine Aasgaard, Alice LaPort and Juanita Thompson.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 13 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with visitation for one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in Aspelund Lutheran Cem-etery, Flom.
