Leech Lake Tribal College Board terminates President Leah Carpenter
The Leech Lake Tribal College Board of Trustees announced today the termination without cause of Leah Carpenter as president of the college, effective Friday.
Yvonne Wilson, chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, said in a press release that the decision to terminate Carpenter was precipitated by the deteriorating relationship between the newly elected Leech Lake Tribal Council and the president and Board of Trustees.
"It's news to the Leech Lake Tribal Council," said Rob Aitken, executive director for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Wednesday.
Aitken said he has learned since the announcement that the Board of Trustees terminated Carpenter. He noted that the action is within the power of the Board of Trustees.
The Tribal Council, he added, reserves comment until it has more information on the matter.
Carpenter has been the president of the college since January 2005. Prior to becoming president, she was interim president from September 2003, and vice president from July 2002.
The Board of Trustees has appointed Ginny Carney as the interim president until a search can be conducted for a permanent president in accordance with the college's Presidential Succession Plan.
Carney, who is currently the vice president of academic and student affairs, has served the college since September 2001.
