Lena M. (Gunderson) Godsey, 95, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.
Lena was born the daughter of Harry and Lena (Klomstad) Halverson on June 20, 1915 at a farm home near Audubon. Lena's mother died in childbirth and Lena was baptized at three days of age, beside her mother's casket. She was educated in a rural school and began working in homes at the age of 14.
Lena married George Gunderson on October 11, 1933 and they farmed in Holmesville Township, northeast of Detroit Lakes. She was active in Bakke Lutheran Church. Lena served as president of the ladies auxiliary, chairperson of several circles, a member of Bakke Ladies' Chorus and taught Sunday school for 20 years.
The Gundersons moved from their farm to Detroit Lakes in 1971. George passed away in 1972. Lena was employed at St. Mary's Nursing Center for 6½ years. She married Paul Godsey in 1978. They lived on Big Detroit Lake until 1996, when they became one of the first resident couples at the Winchester. Paul passed away in 1999.
Lena has resided at Oak Crossing since February of 2010. She is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and until recently was an active member in the Miriam Circle. She enjoyed gardening, embroidery work, playing cards and games, baking and doing volunteer work.
Lena is survived by her daughter, Sandy (Chuck) Hatfield; grandchildren, Craig (Stephanie) Hatfield and Carrie (Bret) Brookins; and two great grandsons.
Preceding Lena in death were her parents; husbands, George Gunderson and Paul Godsey; two half brothers and a half sister.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with visitation one hour prior to services.
