Celebrate National Public Lands Day Saturday, Sept. 26, at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Help protect the pine trees.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to help re-stake and install tree tubes that will protect pine trees from deer browse. This area was once logged and with your help new trees will bring back the conifer habitat.

Meet at Tamarac maintenance shop at 9 a.m. for two hours of habitat enhancements. Then stay for the Tamarac Fall Festival with lots of activities featuring the white-tailed deer.

National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year 120,000 volunteers worked in over 1,800 locations and in every state. Now, eight federal agencies and many state and local lands participate in this annual day of caring for shared lands.

National Public Lands Day keeps the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the "tree army" that worked from 1933-42 to preserve and protect America's natural heritage. It also is poised to carry on the President's mission of a "summer of service." Why not become a part of this national effort right here in your own backyard.

The refuge maintenance shop is located just east of the visitor center located 9 miles north of Hwy 34 at the junction of county highways 26 & 29. For more information, contact the refuge at 218-847-2641.
