Leona Winters, 97, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, May 16. 2013 at Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 20 at Berean Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes, with Reverend Tim Riley and Dr. Robert Fuller Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services on Monday.
Leona Winters was born to Theodore and Lena (Helland) Tweten on December 1, 1915 in rural Brocket, N.D. She graduated from Lakota High School in 1935 and St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. During World War II, she worked at the Glen Lakes Sanitarium in Puposki, Minn.
Leona was united in marriage to Dennis Scheeler in 1945 in Minneapolis. He died in 1946. She was united in marriage to Henry A. Winters August 2, 1949 in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Iowa. They made their home in Detroit Lakes, and Leona worked as a registered nurse for St. Mary's Hospital until 1981. She worked for Emmanuel Nursing Home until retiring in 1991. Henry died in 1974.
Leona enjoyed knitting, crocheting and helping others.
Survivors include a brother, Duane (June) Tweten of Devils Lake, N.D.
In addition to her husbands, Dennis and Henry, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kari, seven sisters and three brothers.
