LeRoy R. Martens, 84, of Pelican Rapids, died on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.

LeRoy Robert Martens was born the son of Laurence and Frieda (Wallmow) Martens on Dec. 28, 1924, in Meeker County, Minn. LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Meeker County. He attended Litchfield High School. He farmed for several years near Darwin, and worked for Minnesota Valley Breeders as a technician for 12 years.

On Nov. 3, 1962, LeRoy married Dorothy Severtson at First Lutheran Church, Fargo. LeRoy managed Park Region Coopereative in Pelican Rapids from 1965 to 1973. He and Dorothy moved to Hartford, Wis., where he managed the Iron Ridge Coop until 1977, and managed Coop Services in Greenwood, Wis., for eight years. In 1985, LeRoy retired and they moved back to Pelican Rapids.

LeRoy enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and billiards, bowling and softball. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Pelican Rapids Rotary and the Greenwood Lions.

Surviving LeRoy are his wife, Dorothy; his children, Larry Martens of Twin Falls, Idaho, Keith Martens of Pahrump, Nev., Kristi Martens of Twin Falls, Idaho, Bruce Martens of Stillwater, Minn., Mike (Diane) Martens of Orangevale, Calif., and Barry (Jodi) Martens of Eau Claire, Wis.; six grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Laurence and Frieda; two sisters, Maxine Miller and Phyllis Gabrielson; and daughter-in-law, Liz Martens.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 at Larson Funeral Home in Pelican Rapids. It resumes one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids, with Intern Pastor Al Brooks and Lay Pastor Al Grothe officiating.

Burial will be in Ringsaker Cemetery, Pelican Rapids. Larson Funeral Home of Pelican Rapids has been entrusted with arrangements.
