July 30, 1933-Aug. 1, 2008
LeRoy Uhlir, 75, of rural Pelican Rapids (Dunvilla), died on Friday, August 1, 2008 at his home, under the care of Hospice of Red River Valley with his family by his side.
LeRoy was born to Emil and Lydia (Krajsa) Uhlir on July 30, 1933 on the family farm in Bejou, Minn. He grew up in Bejou Township, attended Bejou Elementary School, and graduated from Mahnomen High School.
LeRoy farmed in the Bejou area until 1956. On Aug. 11, 1956 he married Pearl Roragen, also of Bejou, in Rindahl, Minn. In 1957 LeRoy and Pearl moved to Milwaukee, where LeRoy worked at Western Electric. In 1958, LeRoy and Pearl moved to the Chicago area, where LeRoy worked for GTE (General Telephone and Electric). There, he built his career and was blessed with three children: Roger, Shirley and Karen.
LeRoy retired from GTE in management, and finished his working years with the True Value Home and Garden Center. Upon retirement in 1998, LeRoy and Pearl moved to Dunvilla, where they led a rich, fulfilling and fun retirement -- one with no schedule and lots of naps.
LeRoy enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, travel, and playing cards and games, especially dominoes, with friends. All who knew and loved LeRoy will remember him for his ready, sweet smile and strong handshake. Dumplings were a favorite food of LeRoy's; in fact, LeRoy and Pearl were also known for attending every church dinner within an 80-mile radius.
LeRoy also belonged to the Czech Geneology Society of Illinois, Sons of Norway (Detroit Lakes), WFLA Lodge No. 168 (Mahnomen), Strowger Pioneer Club, Lakes Area Gardeners, and was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church on Franklin Lake.
Surviving LeRoy are his wife Pearl; two daughters, Shirley (Paul) Scott of Oxnard, Calif., and Karen Uhlir of Fairfax, Va.; one son, Roger Uhlir of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandaughters; and two brothers, Wayne (Janet) Uhlir of Bloomington, Minn., and Larry (Diane) Uhler of Woodbury, Minn.
Preceding Leroy in death were his parents, grandparents and other relatives. The family is grateful for the love and support of family, friends, hospice, and church.
Memorials are preferred sent to Hospice of Red River Valley.
