Let's Go Fishing gives back to the community
I volunteer for a wonderful organization called Let's Go Fishing. It's my privilege to take older adults, veterans and kids on "Free" pontoon fishing and scenic excursions. Fishing has always been an important part of my life but the opportunity to share my beloved sport has been a blessing to me.
Often I get to watch a child's eyes light up as they board the large canopy covered pontoon and are handed a rod and reel provided by LGF. Watching their excitement and hearing a giggle and shout as they catch their first fish is very rewarding. My enjoyment is just as exciting for the older adults, many of which are confined to their home or nursing facility and never thought they again would be able to enjoy the water of a beautiful Minnesota lake. Once safely seated, the years peel away and their stories of fishing with loved ones in years gone by begin. The smiles, laughter and hugs have chased away any signs of loneliness, isolation and depression.
The Let's Go Fishing organization needs help from our community. The Detroit Lakes Area Chapter is planning a fundraiser called "Walk for Let's Go Fishing." The walk is planned to take place by the Pavilion at the City Beach on Oct. 1. Registration 9 a.m. - Walk 10 a.m. (mark your calendar). You could sponsor me at www.lgfws.com/Walk for LGF or for a $20 donation you could join us on Saturday, Oct. 1 to walk, receive a free T-shirt and enjoy lunch.
I am so honored to have the opportunity to give back to my community through Let's Go Fishing. I know there are a lot of worthwhile causes that need funding at this time. I hope you will consider Let's Go Fishing as one of them. Thank you. -- Betty Hochhalter, Detroit Lakes
