Letter: Highway 59-Willow Street intersection has been an 'accident waiting to happen'
It was encouraging to read the editorial in last week's Detroit Lakes Tribune that indicated agreement by the two governmental agencies responsible for the Willow Street-Highway 59 intersection.
The highly respected mayor of Detroit Lakes and two professional engineers at MnDOT acknowledged the dangers posed by the current configuration.
For years that intersection has been an "accident waiting to happen."
It is unfortunate that it took an unspeakable tragedy resulting in the death of Bernie Nugent and grave injuries to his wife, Mary, to put this issue on the front burner again.
Let's hope that this time there will be constructive follow-through that will minimize the chances that of such repeated tragedies. That would be a fitting memorial to Bernie Nugent.
