Lindquist strikes out 9, as DL cruises to win over DGF
Strikeouts and solid defense keyed the Detroit Lakes baseball team's season-opening 6-1 victory over visiting Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Tuesday on the DLHS field.
Senior lefty Ben Lindquist went the distance for the Lakers, as he struck out nine Rebels, while allowing just three hits.
Each team had three errors, leading to runs, but DL allowed just one run to plate.
"We played great defense and made the plays to keep them from scoring," said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. "We caught the ball and Ben threw strikes. I could have taken Ben out in the seventh inning, but he wanted to finish. He showed he was a competitor and I let him finish the game."
The Lakers also came up with more timely hits on the Rebel pitchers by scoring three runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth.
Right fielder Logan Baker got the ball rolling with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kyle Singer, who reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the first.
Nake Baker, who singled to reach first base, took second on a Connor McLeod walk and scoring on DGF's second error of the game.
McLeod later scored on a double steal to put the score at 3-0.
"It was a typical first game for both teams," Fuhs said. "It was the first time our guys saw live pitching. They just need to adjust to live pitching."
DGF scored their lone run on a pair of errors, leading to a run.
But the Lakers added three more runs in the fifth on three walks and a big two-out double by Kirk McLeod and single by Ryan Berg.
"Those were some big hits by Kirk and Ryan with two outs," Fuhs said.
Nate Baker finished with two hits to lead the Lakers.
The Lakers were hit by the injury bug already, as Singer went down after swinging at a pitch. Fuhs doesn't know the extent of the injury and how long his fourth pitcher and leadoff hitter will be out.
The Lakers will face Fergus Falls Friday, possibly at Washington Park if the field can be in condition by then.
"It's a good measuring point for us, since Fergus Falls is the favorite to win the section," Fuhs said.
Game time will be at 5 p.m.
