Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

While the purpose of Link Crew at the Detroit Lakes High School is to get freshman involved in the school, this Friday they are inviting the entire community to get involved.

“It started with freshmen and turned into a community-wide event,” Link Crew Advisor Mike Labine said. “This is the first time we’ve tried something this big.”

About six or seven years ago, Link Crew was formed with junior and senior students volunteering to help incoming freshmen acclimate to their new surroundings at DLHS.

They hold various events for the freshmen throughout the year including an orientation on the morning of the first day of school.

Part of the mission of the Link Crew is to encourage freshmen with “involvement in your school — that’s a big one,” Labine said.

So Friday, Sept. 13, before the Detroit Lakes versus Thief River Falls football game, there will be Touchdowns and Tailgate, an event filled with music, food and games — all for the price of getting into the football game.

“With your admission to the football game, you get a free concert, too,” Labine said.

From 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., Tim Eggebraaten will be performing in concert. Food vendors will be selling pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, brats, nachos, root beer floats, cotton candy and much more.

There will be an inflatable bouncy house for the kids and more games for the entire family.

Each vendor is a different organization that has wanted to take part in the event, not just Link Crew.

“We wanted to involve as many school organizations as possible,” Labine said.

Other community organizations have gotten involved as well, not just the school.

Then the football game starts at 7 p.m.

Labine said anyone and everyone are invited to come to the festivities before the game.

While some freshmen may not be interested in football or cheerleading or other activities, this is an opportunity to get everyone involved in their school.

And in anticipation of the success of this year’s event, Labine said it will become an annual event, and he already has a band lined up for next year as well.

“When the community is involved, the school is more successful,” he said.

The Touchdowns and Tailgates event is Sept. 13 before the DLHS vs. TRF football game. Events begin at 5:15 p.m. Cost is admission to the football game, with food costing extra.

Any community organizations interested in setting up a vendor booth at the event can contact Mike Labine at 841-0601.
