Dr. Lloyd C. Carlson, 89, of Detroit Lakes and Sun City West, Ariz., died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at St. Mary's Care Center in Detroit Lakes.
Lloyd was born to Carl and Lena (Byberg) Carlson on Dec. 26, 1918 in Valley City, N.D., where he was raised and educated. Lloyd attended Jamestown College and was very active in athletics. He later was inducted into the Jamestown College Athletic Hall of Fame. After college he coached and taught in Drake, N.D.
In 1941, he was inducted into the Army Air Force and served on a B-17 Bomber crew during the war. They flew 34 bombing missions over Germany. Lloyd return home on the USS Liberty in 1945. After his discharge, he continued his education, receiving a degree in optometry. He started his practice in Moorhead in 1947.
Lloyd married Gloria Thysell on Aug. 4, 1951 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. They made their home in Moorhead, and Lloyd continued his practice until retiring in 1984. During his retirement, they spent winters in Sun City West, Arizona and summers in Detroit Lakes at their cottage. They also traveled to various places such as Hawaii, Mexico and Norway. Lloyd enjoyed photography, golfing, oil painting and reading.
Surviving Lloyd are his wife, Gloria; one brother, Lew (Fern) Carlson of Camas, Wash.; one sister, Doris ( Ken) Chase of Lodi, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Mary Carlson of Weston, Conn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents; brother, Ben; and two sisters, Tillie and Jessye.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, July 28 at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, which is providing arrangements.
