United Way Community Celebration
The fifth annual United Way Community Celebration gets underway at 4:30 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Pavilion. The Community Celebration will have a free meal for all who attend, as well as live entertainment throughout the evening, including music, piñatas, blow-up games, face painting and tattoos for the kids. The agencies that receive funding from the United Way will also be showcased throughout the celebration, which concludes at 6:30 p.m.
Ian Tyson concert
Canadian music icon and platinum recording artist Ian Tyson -- a recipient of the Order of Canada as well as multiple Juno Awards and Canadian Country Music Awards -- performs live at Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino at 8 p.m. Tickets, ranging in price from $10 general admission to $15-$25 reserved, are on sale now at the casino box office (777 Casino Road, Mahnomen), by phone at 800-313-7469, or online at www.starcasino.com.
'Rescues & Runways'
The Detroit Lakes Maurices store, located inside the Washington Square Mall, will be having "Rescues & Runways" fashion show at 6 p.m. to benefit the Humane Society of the Lakes. Local models will be joined on stage by Humane Society pets in need of adoption. This show is part of a month long campaign by all Maurices stores in the region to help animals in need of homes. The fashion show is free, but the store will be accepting pet and office supplies as well as cash donations to benefit the Humane Society. There will also be a raffle drawing; tickets are available at Maurices and the Humane Society.
Ann Zemke, author of the book 'They Named Me Marjorie,' presents her grandmother's story on the orphan train at 6:30 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, DL. The public is invited, and a free-will offering will be taken. A light supper will be served at 5:30 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 18
A Fall Bazaar at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee, begins at 11 a.m. with a turkey steak dinner with all the trimmings. Cost is $7. There will also be crafts, baked goods, quilts and garden produce. Doors open at 10 a.m.
A Lake Park Country Twirlers dance is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Park-Audubon High School, Lake Park. Caller is Royce Nelson.
St. Cecelia Trio
The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center welcomes the St. Cecelia Trio to Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills for a 7:30 p.m. concert. The trio features Lisa Winter on flute, Peter Kirchner on cello and Jackie Tellers on piano, performing chamber music ranging from baroque to contemporary classical. Zorbaz presents the second annual Leather & Leavez Motorcycle Rally on Saturday, Sept. 19, starting at noon in front of the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center, 826 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. There will be a pancake breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon at the DLCCC. Stops include the Zorbaz restaurants at Pelican, Ottertail, Little Pine and Perham, ending with food, live music and fun at the Detroit Lakes Zorbaz Restaurant. Proceeds will benefit the DLCCC. Denim & Diamonds
The Becker County Historical Society's annual fundraiser, "Denim & Diamonds," is set for Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes. This red carpet event will begin with a social hour and silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. program featuring the premiere of the film "Timber -- Dead and Down: A Historical Look at the Logging Industry in Northern Minnesota." Tickets are available at the Becker County Historical Society Museum, located at 714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes (across the parking lot from the Historic Holmes Theatre.
