Detroit Lakes resident Loren E. "Gene" Ross, 78, died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Knapp Memorial Hospital in Weslaco, Texas.

Loren Eugene Ross was born to Archie and Ester (Kriesel) Ross on July 8, 1930 in Wheaton, Minn. He was baptized in the Congregational Church in Tintah, Minn. He served his country in Korea during the Korean conflict. In 1959, Gene married Margaret ("Peggy") Nirschl at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ada, Minn., and they made their home near Tintah.

Gene moved his family to Wheaton in 1967. In 1969, he purchased the Hardware Hank store in Wheaton. He enjoyed working with the public and continued to do so until, due to his health, he had to retire. In April 2005, he and Peggy moved to Detroit Lakes, where he was able to do all the fishing he liked. Gene and Peggy wintered in Weslaco, Texas.

Gene loved to fish, hunt, play cards, play billiards, work with stained glass, and spend time with his family. He was active in the American Legion, the Shriners, the Masons, and was a member of the VFW. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes.

Gene will be remembered and missed by his wife, Peggy; his three children, Gregory (Heather) Ross of Bemidji, Susan (Kevin) Cote of Fargo and Sharon Ross of Coronado, Calif.; his seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Mannerud and Doris Rich.

Preceding Gene in death were his parents, Archie and Ester Ross; three brothers, Orin, Clinton and Orman Ross; and one sister, Muriel Trebil.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a Prayer Service starting at 4 p.m. Visitation will also continue for one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at the Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes, United Church of Christ.
