Loren A. Thalmann, 75, of Henning, Minn., died on Wednesday June 17, 2009 at the Henning Golden Living Center.
Loren Alvin Thalmann was born the son of Herman and Eleonora (Grefe) Thalmann on March 24, 1934 in Ottertail, Minn., where he grew up and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. He attended St. John's parochial school through the eighth grade, and graduated from Henning High School with the Class of 1953. He served in the U.S. Army, 1956-58. He then worked for Oliver Mining Company in Eveleth, Minn., and also raised turkeys for Henning Hatchery.
Loren married Janice Tiede on Oct. 7, 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church. They had three children. They made their home on their farm at Ottertail until January of 1969, when they moved into Henning and opened Thalmann's Cafe, which they operated until August of 1973.
Loren began selling life insurance in April 1960, and was active in the Thalmann Insurance Agency until his retirement on Oct. 31, 2008. He loved selling the best insurance that was suited for his clients for 48 years, and kept in touch by calling them on their birthdays every year.
Loren liked to bowl, fry pancakes, fish, hunt, build birdhouses, play cards, and raise ducks and geese. He especially loved to go fishing with his little grandsons. He also loved to take family vacations, which included trips to Branson, Mo., Alaska, Hawaii, and many other areas of the United States.
Loren was active in Henning. He was a member of the Henning Volunteer Fire Department, the Commercial Club, Clement Manor board, Henning Homes board, Henning Food Shelf, Henning Lions Club, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council, and also served 17 years on the Henning City Council.
Surviving Loren are his wife, Janice; daughters, Lori Kay (Joe) Pytlik of Horace, N.D., and Becky Sue (Mark) Eisenwinter of St. Cloud; two grandsons; three step-grandchildren; sister, Elvera (Bernard) Sanders of DePere, Wis.; brothers, Victor (Jackie) Thalmann of Grand Junction, Colo., and Roland (LaVey) Thalmann of Ottertail; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Judy) Tiede of Wadena and Dana Tiede of Port St. John, Fla.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his son, Craig Herman Thalmann (June 10, 1964); his parents, Herman and Eleonora; and a sister and brother-in-law: Elaine and Leonard Cloutier.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at the Belmont Funeral Home in Henning, followed with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday June 22 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Henning, with the Rev. Randy Maland and Rev. David Cloeter officiating. Casket bearers are Alan Cloutier, Mike Sanders, Rod Thalmann, Pete Thalmann, Jason Tiede, and David Sanders. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Ottertail.
