Luella E. Gandrud

Luella E. Gandrud, 96, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in North Oaks, Minn.

Luella was born to Martha (Klug) Meyer and Frederick Meyer on November 30, 1913 in Luce, Ottertail County, Minn. She was educated at Luce, Perham and Frazee, graduating from Frazee High School in 1932. During her high school years Luella worked at Pettibone Lodge at Shoreham.

After graduating from Lawrence Beauty School in Minneapolis, Luella was a licensed cosmetologist and was employed in Detroit Lakes at Mickey's Beauty Shop.

In 1937 Luella married K.I. "Kelly" Gandrud from Richwood. They had three daughters, Krista, Donna and Gileen. Kelly was a Detroit Lakes businessman for 45 years and Luella ran the Surge Dairy Equipment parts store in addition to her household. An accomplished sewer, she made beautiful clothing and many household items for years.

Luella enjoyed making Norwegian Hardanger embroidery and her handiwork skills were noted with blue ribbons awarded to her at the 1994 Minnesota State Fair. The Gandruds were lifelong members of First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, where Luella was a past member of the First Lutheran Board of Education, Junior Aid, Circle and Action Corps, as well as being dedicated and accomplished quilter. She made unique, handmade quilts for each member of her family.

Because Kelly was a Detroit Lakes volunteer fireman for 40 years, they enjoyed Fire Department activities, the Elks Club and the Eagles Club. Luella lived on Highway 10 East, Loring Avenue and Lincoln Park and Oak Crossing Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes.

In July of this year, Luella's family moved her to Clare Bridge, Brookdale Senior Living in North Oaks, Minn., where she passed away.

She is survived by three daughters and their families, Krista (Richard) Johnson and Donna (John) Uline, both of Blaine, Minn., and Gileen "Jill" (John"Jack) Wahman of St. Cloud. Her 12 grandchildren are John Sanda, Karin Sanda Luebke, Steven, Timothy, Paul and David Sanda; Nancy Nelson, Sharon Ferguson, Sandra Westerman and Thomas Walberg; Beth Behme and Ginny Betzer. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband Kelly Gandrud (1989); her parents; her sister Elsa King; and her brothers, Arnold Meyer and George "Pete" Meyer.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 in the Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home on Highway 96 in Shorewood, Minn. with a reviewal from noon until 2 p.m. Burial took place this week in the Richwood Lutheran Church Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, Luella's daughters will welcome friends and family in the library of First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes.
