Mabel Gunderson

Former Hawley resident Mabel R. Gunderson, 95, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, August 22, 2008, at St. Mary's Innovis Health.

Mabel Regina Gunderson was born to Knud E. and Randina (Asbjornson) Gunderson on Oct. 18, 1912, in Kensett, Iowa. She moved with her parents to the Hawley area in 1920. She grew up and attended school in Hawley, graduating in 1931.

Mabel married Stanley V. Gunderson on Nov. 17, 1935 at the Hawley Lutheran Church Parsonage. Mabel was a homemaker and assisted neighbors with various tasks. She was a 4-H leader for many years, and a member of a Homemakers Club. Mabel was a member of Hawley Lutheran Church, and had held the position of president of Hawley Lutheran Church Ladies Aide. Stanley died April 1, 2006. Mabel was a resident of Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes at the time of her death.

Surviving Mabel are her daughter, Dorothy (Dunnell) Miller of Webster, Minn.; two sons, Theodore "Ted" (Marlyss) Gunderson of Faribault, Minn., and Charles (Ruth) Gunderson of Detroit Lakes; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Preceding Mabel in death were her husband, Stanley; her parents; and two sisters, Pearl Bracken and Alice Menzies.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 25, at Hawley Lutheran Church in Hawley, with interment following at the Hawley Cemetery.
