MAHNOMEN FOOTBALL No. 2 Indians swat No. 7 Falcons
For a rare moment in Friday's game, the Mahnomen football team was confronted by its biggest adversity of the season -- the Indians found themselves behind for the first time this season.
It didn't last long, though.
The No. 7 Class 1A ranked Fertile-Beltrami squad struck first on the No. 2 ranked Indians after Mahnomen fumbled the opening kickoff, resulting in a Falcon 23-yard field goal.
Score: Fertile-Beltrami 3, Mahnomen 0.
It was a sight to behold, since the Indians hadn't had to look up against an opponent yet this season -- but it was more than enough motivation, as Mahnomen reeled off 47 unanswered points for the 47-3 victory to stay undefeated at 7-0 and hand Fertile-Beltrami its first defeat of the season.
"I thought it was big for our defense to hold them to a field goal at that point," said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. "They had one nice drive to start the second half, but we were able to stop them from scoring. Other than that, we really shut them down.
"I was really proud of how we responded after being down for the first time this season."
The Indians scored three touchdowns in the first half, along with three two-point conversions, to take a 24-3 halftime lead.
Quarterback Jacob Pavek scored a pair of rushing touchdowns from 11 and five yards out, while running back Avery Fairbanks opened the Mahnomen scoring barrage with a 25-yard end zone scamper.
Fairbanks added another two-yard dive for six points in the third quarter for the 32-3 advantage, then added another one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter, along with a Bob Bjorge 16-yard rush for a score.
Mahnomen converted all its two-point conversions.
"Avery Fairbanks had another strong game," Clark said. "He seemed to have a little extra burst all night. The offensive line did a nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage again, and we executed all night on offense."
Fairbanks led in rushing with 122 yards on 21 carries, while Pavek had 116 on 14 attempts.
Mahnomen racked up 320 yards of rushing, while the Indian defense stifled Fertile-Beltrami to a paltry 76 yards on the ground and 78 through the air.
Mahnomen closes out the regular season at Red Lake County (3-4) Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Indians can clinch the No. 1 seed in Section 6-1A with a win, or a Browerville loss.
