Mahnomen woman in court for cashing check twice
A Mahnomen woman is expected to make her first appearance July 3 in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of property theft-over $1,000.
Candice Elaine Bachmeier, 27, of 2235 College Rd. No. 208, Mahnomen, is accused of cashing a $2,976 tax refund check from the state of Minnesota on Feb. 29 at Midwest Bank, allegedly with the knowledge that payment on the check had been stopped.
According to the complaint, Bachmeier had reported to the state that her refund check had been delivered to her old home address, and she had never received it. She then asked that a new check be sent to her new address, and a second check for the same amount was issued and sent to her new address. She cashed that check on March 5.
The original check was later returned to Midwest Bank with a "stop payment" order on it, at which time it was discovered that both checks had been cashed despite the fact that payment on the first check was supposed to have been stopped.
