Making beautiful music together
One of country music’s hottest duos, Thompson Square, will be taking the WE Fest stage for the first time this Saturday.
Their ability to put on a great show, unique story of success and multiple hit songs promise to make them a favorite act for concert-goers.
Thompson Square singer Keifer Thompson said he and wife-singing partner Shawna are excited to be coming back to the area.
“We’ve been all over Minnesota,” he said, and that included a local stop at Shooting Star Casino last year.
Their current tour has taken them all around the United States during the past few months.
“It’s been really liberating this summer just to do our own thing,” Thompson said.
They have previously appeared on the tours of other country stars such as Luke Bryan and Lady Antebellum, he said, but getting to headline their own series of shows has been a new experience.
“It’s been an amazing thing,” Thompson said.
And crowds out at the concert this weekend can definitely expect to have a good time.
“It’s pretty rockin’… it’s loud and it’s guitars and it’s a blast,” Thompson said.
“Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” “If I Didn’t Have You” and “Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About” are just a few of the duo’s hits attendees can expect to sing along to during the show.
He added that they have seen a great response and turnout from their fans during this most recent tour.
“We’ve just watched it grow all year long,” he said.
Something else that sets this duo apart is the fact that they’ve kept up both a recording career and successful marriage.
In an age where short-lived celebrity marriages are all too common, Keifer and Shawna Thompson have bucked the trend, and have been together now for 15 years.
“I guess I haven’t thought about it for a while... that’s a long time,” Thompson said with a laugh.
The two met shortly after each moved to Nashville to pursue solo careers. They soon teamed up, both in music and in their relationship, and have been writing and performing together ever since.
They also aren’t shy about incorporating the joys and struggles of their marriage into their music.
“We got married before we had any of this,” Thompson said. Indeed, the two were married for nearly a decade before hitting it big on the country music scene.
That has helped keep their feet planted firmly on the ground, Thompson said.
The honesty and emotion in their music has also led to big success both on the charts and in winning awards.
They had their first No. 1 hit with “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not” back in 2010.
The pair has also won a number of music’s biggest prizes, including winning consecutive awards for Best Vocal Duo of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 2012 and 2013.
They released the single “I Can’t Outrun You” in June, the fourth off their album “Just Feels Good,” and plan on getting back in the studio soon.
Thompson said that a new album might be coming as soon as early 2015.
“We don’t put an album out until it’s ready,” he said, but added that they’ve recently been working on new music.
Thompson Square will be performing on the WE Fest Main Stage at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. They will be on after Chris Hawkey and followed by Travis Tritt, Brantley Gilbert and Zac Brown Band.
Thompson said that they’ve met the other musicians through various events and awards shows, and are looking forward to seeing them again.
“We’ve actually kind of become buddies,” Thompson about fellow performer Brantley Gilbert.
Saturday will be the final night of performances, rounding out the 2014 event with the Zac Brown Band at 10:45 p.m.
