Man accused of assaulting officer
A Minneapolis man made his first appearance Monday in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of fourth degree assault of an officer.
Norman Jerome Basswood, 43, of 1115 4th St. NE, Minneapolis, is also facing related charges of misdemeanor obstructing an officer and gross misdemeanor domestic assault in connection with the June 20 incident in Pine Point.
According to the complaint, Basswood allegedly showed up at a relative's residence in Pine Point and refused to leave, even after an officer was called to intervene. After the sheriff's deputy arrived, Basswood was allegedly aggressive and hostile, resisting attempts by the officer to get him to leave.
A second deputy was called, and while the first deputy was waiting for backup, Basswood allegedly came toward him with a large piece of wood, then punched his vehicle in the driver's side window and hood. After the second officer arrived, the hostilities continued until the deputies were able to get Basswood down on the ground and handcuff him.
Basswood's next court appearance is set for July 6. He remains in custody at the Becker County Jail, with bail set at $10,000 with conditions, or $40,000 without.
