Man appears on 12-year-old felony charge
Steven Paul Wilheim, 34, of 846 Brookdale Drive, New Haven, Ind., made his first appearance Wednesday in Becker County District Court -- on a felony charge that had first been filed more than 12 years earlier.
Wilheim was arrested on an outstanding warrant last week, to face charges stemming from his 1997 arrest in Detroit Lakes.
In the complaint -- which was filed by then-Detroit Lakes Police Department officer John Bellefeuille, who has since become a Becker County commissioner -- Wilheim was accused of forging three checks at two Detroit Lakes businesses between Dec. 16-18, 1997. The checks were written for a total of $263, on the account of a Detroit Lakes couple who had reported their checkbook missing that same week.
Wilheim will make his next court appearance Aug. 16; he has been taken into custody at the Becker County Jail, with bail set at $5,000.
