Man charged with car theft, fleeing
A Mahnomen man is scheduled to appear Monday in Becker County District Court on felony charges of motor vehicle theft and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
Kevin Jerome Basswood Jr., 19, of 120 E. Lincoln Ave., Mahnomen, is accused of taking a vehicle from a Becker County residence on Sept. 8.
Basswood was allegedly behind the wheel of a vehicle that a Detroit Lakes police officer attempted to stop for a traffic violation; a chase ensued that reached speeds of between 75 and 100 miles per hour. After briefly losing sight of the vehicle on County Road 37, it was found overturned in the east ditch of County Road 26.
The vehicle was subsequently determined to be stolen. The driver had fled the scene on foot, and the vehicle’s owner identified a hat found in the front seat of the vehicle as belonging to “a man named Kevin from Ponsford.” The owner said she had seen him in the trailer court where she lived the day before the incident occurred.
Officers also found an apparently incriminating post on Basswood’s Facebook page that said he was “still on da loose.”
He is currently in custody at the Becker County Jail, with bail set at $5,000 with conditions, or $15,000 without conditions.
