Man in court for stolen goods
An Ogema man made his first appearance in Becker County District Court last week on a felony charge of receiving stolen property.
Justin Cody Hawpetoss, 24, of 224 Sunnyside Ave., Ogema, is accused of taking part in the theft of a motor vehicle from in front of the newspaper offices on Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes on June 10.
According to the criminal complaint, the suspect vehicle was later found parked outside an Ogema residence; the owner said that Hawpetoss and a female passenger had dropped off the vehicle there, after allegedly trying to sell it to him. After the two suspects were found and questioned, the woman said she had no idea who the vehicle belonged to; Hawpetoss said he had “borrowed” it from a friend at Casey’s General Store. Hawpetoss is currently in custody at the Becker County Jail awaiting his next court appearance, at a June 24 Rule 8 hearing. His bail was set at $5,000 with conditions, or $15,000 without conditions.
