Man sentenced on firearms charge
A Detroit Lakes man was convicted and sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony firearms tampering violation (serial numbers removed).
Brandon Michael Kertscher, 22, of 20450 Co. Hwy. 21, Lot 35, Detroit Lakes, was ordered to serve five years of supervised probation and 90 days in jail, as well as to do community service in lieu of a $1,160 court fine.
Additional counts including felony possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and misdemeanor fleeing a peace officer were dismissed at sentencing.
Kertscher was accused in connection with a Sept. 8, 2012 incident in Detroit Lakes. A complainant at Riverview Trailer Park called law enforcement to report a disturbance there. Kertscher was reportedly making threats to burn down the house of one of the trailer park residents, but left the scene on foot before officers arrived.
He was found walking near the Detroit Lakes Middle School, and tried to walk away when the officer attempted to detain him for questioning.
A pursuit on foot ensued, and Kertscher was eventually caught and brought down to the ground. As he fell, he threw away something that landed under a nearby car.
It was later discovered that the object was a .ss-caliber hand gun with no serial numbers and a cut-down barrel.
A round of live ammunition was also discovered during a pat-down search of Kertscher. He did not have a permit to carry the weapon.
