Marian Berg

May 20, 1934-March 13, 2008

Marian B. Berg, 73, a longtime resident of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, after a lengthy illness, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Marian Barbara Illg was born to Hugo and Laura (Mischke) Illg of Evergreen Township, Becker County on May 20, 1934. She attended country school and graduated from Frazee High School in 1952. She then attended Detroit Lakes Business College, graduating in 1953, and did office work at Swifts and Blandings. Marian married Donald Berg on July 31, 1954. They resided in Detroit Lakes until 1955, when they moved to Rochert. In December 1956 they moved to Kenmare, N.D., and in 1959 returned to Detroit Lakes, where Marian continued working at several businesses including Detroit State Bank and State Farm Insurance.

Marian was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church Women of America (LCWA), a volunteer at St. Mary's Regional Health Center, Emmanuel Nursing Home, and was active in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Women's Auxiliary for many years. She also held officer positions at the state and local level for the NALC Women's Auxiliary for a number of years. She had attended state conventions since 1966 in an officer capacity, and participated in four NALC National Conventions representing Minnesota.

Marian had a great love for traveling and some of her favorite places include Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Norway.

Surviving Marian are her husband, Donald Berg of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Barb (Terry Dibley) of Maple Grove, Minn., and Cindy (Jim) Irving of Bloomington, Ill.; two brothers, Norbert (Beatrice) Illg of Frazee and Steven Illg of Moorhead; as well as two grandchildren who hold a very special place in her heart.

Preceding Marian in death were her parents and infant twin sons.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, March 17, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with interment at Eksjo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Lake Park.
