Mark was born to Rudolph and Joan (Gobernatz) Yliniemi on Nov. 9, 1958 in Detroit Lakes. He attended the Osage Elementary School through the 4th grade, and then went on to attend middle school and high school in Park Rapids. He graduated from Park Rapids High School with the Class of 1977.

Mark was tragically injured in a snowmobile accident in November 1977, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. After extended hospitalizations at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, where Mark underwent numerous surgeries and physical therapy rehabilitation, he went on to attend the Detroit Lakes Vocational Technical College, where he studied agriculture and architectural drafting.

Upon completing his studies, Mark went to work for Lester Buildings in Lester Prairie, Minn., where he designed agricultural buildings for a time. He returned to the Ponsford area, where he went to work as a trucking dispatcher for the Jerry Holmer Trucking Company. Mark's great dedication to his work, along with his organizational and people skills, allowed him to enjoy a career in the trucking industry that spanned from the early 1980s through 2007.

Mark had a great love for the outdoors, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, at which, despite his handicaps, he was very successful. Mark also enjoyed art and was a very talented sketch artist, particularly in drawing beautiful fishing sketches. Above all, Mark dedicated himself to his family, and especially loved his nieces and nephews with all his heart.
