May is time to dig up, get rid of dandelions

According to the Becker County Master Gardeners, May is the time to

  • Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to see hundreds of flowering
  • crabapples in full bloom around Mother’s Day. Make note of favorites you’d like in your landscape, but check them for disease resistance and ability to retain fruit over winter.
  • Check rhubarb plants and asparagus beds, start harvesting when they reach eating size.
  • Direct seed annual flowers by mid-May on till mid-June.
  • Clean all seed starting equipment after all transplanting is done. One part bleach to nine parts of water.
  • Dandelions can be a perennial problem. Dig them up now, when it’s easy to see where they are. Or if there are too many to pull, spot spray them with a broad-leaf herbicide containing 2.4-D. One time should do it, though new plants may appear later from seeds in the soil. Check for them again next autumn and once again pull or spray.
