Menahga patient allegedly assaults female paramedic en route to hospital
A man who was being brought to the hospital was accused of assaulting the paramedic trying to help him.
According to Wadena County District Court records, Charles John Smith, of St. Paul, was being transported to St. Joseph's Hospital emergency room on June 17 when he struck a female paramedic twice in the face as she tried to attend to his care.
The ambulance had picked up Smith from a restaurant in Menahga after a report that someone had fallen down. A Wadena County sheriff's deputy noticed an odor of alcohol on Smith and saw Smith become combative before being loaded into the ambulance, so the deputy followed the ambulance to the hospital.
Smith was charged July 7 with assault in the fourth degree -- hospital emergency personnel.
