Menahga women appears on check forgery charge
Nicole Stopka, 29, 13091 120th St., Menahga appeared in Hubbard County District Court on a check forgery charge.
According to the complaint, Citizens National Bank notified the Park Rapids police investigator of a forged check cashed Nov. 23, 2007. The check for $3,200 was made out to Stopka to pay off a $2,350 funeral bill. Originally, the check was made out to the funeral home, but the funeral home's name was scratched out as the payee and Stopka's name was filled in. She paid the funeral home $1,500, promising to pay the balance at the rate of $100 per month. She had no authority to alter the check and has not been able to account for the $1,700.
Maximum penalty on the felony offense is 10 years in jail and/or a $20,000 fine.
