MeritCare expansion likely will cause Lincoln skating rink to move
The City of Detroit Lakes will likely move forward on possibly selling the Lincoln skating rink property to MeritCare and relocate the rink to Peoples Park, next to the skate park.
The Community Development Committee met Thursday afternoon to discuss MeritCare's request to purchase the property for enlarging its existing facility, as well as parking and stormwater retention.
"We don't necessarily want to sell the property, but because of who they are and where they are, we might have a willingness," Community Development Director Larry Remmen said.
Because MeritCare is a regional center, bring people to Detroit Lakes from the surrounding area, the city would like to work with the medical clinic.
The committee plans to recommend to the Detroit Lakes City Council Tuesday that the city move forward in pursuing an appraisal of the property.
Remmen said it likely won't be worth too much because it isn't located directly on Lincoln Avenue and is a low-lying piece of property.
"I think they would like to see some action sooner rather than later," Remmen said.
"It makes sense to pursue it and see if we can accommodate them," committee member Jim Anderson said. "Let's move down the path."
The Detroit Lakes City Council meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. in city hall.
