Middle school band concert is May 2
The Detroit Lakes Middle School bands will present their final concert of the school year in the Spring Band Concert on Thursday, May 2. The sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands will perform.
As always, the bands will be performing an eclectic variety of music. The listener will hear marches — both traditional and contemporary — serious programmatic works, cultural music, slow and melodic portions, popular and rock tunes and original contemporary band compositions.
Leading off the program will be the seventh grade band. Their pieces include a classic style march in “School Colors on Parade,” highlighting a medley of college school songs; “Takeoff!” a work depicting the miracle of manned flight; “Excellentia Overture,” and the Beach Boys classic “Kokomo.”
Next to perform will be the seventh grade band. Their pieces include “On The March;” “Return of the Monarchs,” a work that musically depicts the monarch butterfly’s migration patterns; “Air Force One,” a selection depicting the presidential airplane of the United States; Cold Play’s “Viva La Vida,” and a contemporary overture, “New Millennium.”
Closing out the performance is the eighth grade band. They will open with “Con Brio March,” followed by “Chorale and Shaker Dance,” which is a dramatic presentation based on the melody “The Gift to be Simple” and the Shaker Culture of the United States. Next on the program is a band arrangement of pop singer Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night/The Edge of Glory” hits. The eighth grade band will close out the concert with “Ascend.”
All the bands are under the direction of DLMS band director Paul Dierkhising.
The performance will be given in the George Simson Middle School Auditorium and will begin at 7:30 p.m. The general public is welcome and invited to attend. There is no admission charge.
