Milton D. Nelson, 66, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids.
Milton David Nelson was born to Melvin and Nellie (Larson) Nelson on July 17, 1946 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up and received his education in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1964. In high school he competed and excelled on the wrestling team. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. He served in the United States Marine Corps.
On November 15, 1969, Milton was united in marriage to Darlene Kay Fischer in Bismarck, N.D. They lived and farmed in rural Detroit Lakes and he also worked at the Swift Turkey Plant. On Dec. 1, 1978 he was united in marriage to Ruth Haspel in Detroit Lakes. He has driven truck for STS Trucking of Detroit Lakes for the past 20 years.
Milton enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren very much. He also liked fishing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and long rides on the pontoon.
Surviving Milton are his wife, Ruth; one son Jeff (Reagan Dunn) Nelson of Pocatello, Idaho; two daughters, Christi (Kirk) Brown of Billings, Mont., and Stacey (Todd) Frank of Audubon; seven grandchildren, Brayden and Tyler Brown, Kaden, Jace, and Nicolas Gordon, Elena Nelson and Mason Frank; his father, Melvin Nelson; one sister, Judy (Richard) Vierzba of Kalispell, Mont.; one brother, Robert Nelson of Detroit Lakes; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Darlene (1977); and his mother, Nellie Nelson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and one hour prior to Thursday's services at the church.
Interment will be held at a later date.
