Sherri Thomsen, regional executive director of the Minn-Kota Chapter of the American Red Cross, has resigned from her job, citing a desire to spend more time with her family.

She said Monday she won't be leaving the post until her replacement is found.

Thomsen said she submitted her resignation in June and it officially takes effect at the end of August.

However, she said she has agreed to stay beyond August as interim executive director until her replacement is found.

That process will involve the national headquarters of the Red Cross, which will do initial screening of candidates, according to Thomsen.

The final selection will be done by a search committee organized by the Minn-Kota Chapter.

During Thomsen's six-year tenure, the Minn-Kota Chapter grew from one office serving 12 counties to seven offices serving all of North Dakota and 10 counties in Minnesota.

Thomsen said the change ranks among the biggest challenges she faced during her time with the Red Cross, adding that it allowed the agency to decrease overhead while still serving the community.

Helping lead more than 900 volunteers and staff during the flooding last spring was another major challenge, said Thomsen, who said she is leaving to spend more time with her family.

"I don't want to look back one day and wish I'd had more time with my two little boys," Thomsen said.

David Miller, chairman of the Minn-Kota board, said Thomsen's departure will be felt across the region.

"It will be extremely difficult to replace her commitment and talent," he said.
