Minnesota ranks poorly when it comes to freedom
In 2009, Professors William P. Ruger and Jason Sorens presented the first-ever comprehensive ranking of the American states on their public policies affecting individual freedoms in the economic, social, and personal spheres. This study, "Freedom in the 50 states. An index of personal and economic freedom," was conducted at the Mercatus Center on George Mason University. So how does freedom in Minnesota and North Dakota rank out of the fifty states? Minnesota -- Overall Freedom 35th, Regulatory Freedom 30th, Fiscal Freedom 35th, Personal Freedom 31st, Economic Freedom 31st.
North Dakota -- Overall Freedom tenth, Regulatory Freedom second, Fiscal Freedom seventh, Personal Freedom 33rd, Economic Freedom fourth.
I believe we as Minnesotans can do better! What states are No. 1 in the categories? Michigan first in Regulatory Freedom, New Hampshire first in Fiscal Freedom, Alaska first in Personal Freedom, South Dakota first in Economic Freedom, and the most free state in the country? New Hampshire with single digit ranking in all areas except personal freedom (18th).
