Minnetonka hands Lakers 42-12 loss

MINNETONKA - Minnetonka boasts of size -- and a lot of it -- as Detroit Lakes found out.

The Skippers play in a big stadium, with big numbers behind a pair of big lines.

The Lakers (2-4) couldn't contain that size and speed the Class 5A Minnetonka -- with a school enrollment of 1,744 students -- employed, resulting in a 42-12 loss Friday.

The Skippers (4-2) also found a variety ways to score, including a potent rushing attack, a returned interception for a touchdown and a blocked punt for six points, which led to a 35-6 halftime advantage.

Anchoring all that size on the defensive line was Division I recruit Beau Allen, who clogged up the middle as an athletic 301-pound nose guard.

The Lakers managed just 115 yards on the ground on 32 carries. Take away Brian Labat's 45-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and DL averaged just 2.3 yards per carry.

Going to the air was no more effective, as sophomore quarterback Joe Mollberg was under heavy pressure the entire evening.

Mollberg was able to get off another long touchdown pass to his favorite target, junior Josh Stalberger, this one a 70-yard strike down the visitor's sideline to pull DL to within 21-6 at the 6:26 mark of the second quarter.

Stalberger collected four grabs for 100 yards on the night.

But the pressure in Mollberg's face forced three interceptions, including a 36-yarder returned for a touchdown by Grayson Smith, for a 14-0 Minnetonka lead.

Mollberg finished going 9-19 for 123 yards.

Minnetonka had a consistent rushing attack, with Parker Weinstock leading the way with 69 yards on 11 carries, including two TD runs.

The Skippers added to an already blossoming 28-6 lead when Zach Siemens blocked a Brock Johnson punt and ran it back 17 yards for the six points, with 3:14 remaining in the first half.

The Lakers will get back to normal competition Thursday when they travel to Thief River Falls for a 7 p.m. start.
