- Rebecca Yeh, daughter of Tim and Kathy Yeh of Nissawa, is the 2012 winner of the Families Forever Scholarship in memory of Mary Disse Ballard during the recent Miss Northwest Scholarship event held in Detroit Lakes on July 13.

Rebecca is also the winner of the Miss Northwest title and will represent this area at Miss Minnesota in 2013.

Rebecca is a 2011 Brainerd High School graduate from Nisswa. She has studied violin with Grant Wilcox of Brainerd, Sally O'Reilly of the University of Minnesota and Steven Copes of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Her accomplishments include 2008 Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) national strings competition finalist and 2008 Minnesota All-State High School Orchestra concertmaster. Rebecca won the Minnesota Orchestra Schmit Music Award as top violinist in its 2009 YPSCA competition.

She was a featured artist for Minnesota Public Radio's inaugural Minnesota Varsity classic music showcase this last spring. Rebecca performed de Beriot's 7th Violin Concerto for the Heartland Symphony in Brainerd in 2006, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto for performances of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and Vivaldi's Winter for the Great River Strings Orchestra in 2011.

She has won many performance prizes including from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Sinfonia, Thursday Musical, Schubert Club, and Minnesota String and Orchestra Teachers Association (MNSOTA).

In addition to a busy violin-teaching studio, Rebecca was team captain, voted MVP and earned Minnesota All-State in Cross Country for her performance at the State Championship. She is attending Ohio Northern University this fall enrolled in a 6-year Doctor of Pharmacy program.

The Garden Quilt Show and Tea in Lake Park is the fund-raising arm of the Families Forever scholarship. This year's quilt show takes place on Aug. 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Quilts will be displayed, tea will be served and the gardens should be at their peak. If you have a quilt you have made, been given or purchased and would like to display it, please call 218-234-1766 before Aug. 11.

Prizes are given to the top five quilts the people attending pick as their favorites. Door prizes are given also. There are a limited amount of lunches available for purchase the day of the show.
