Mixed Blood Theatre brings two performances to Detroit Lakes
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

January is Black History Month, and Detroit Lakes residents will have not just one, but two opportunities to experience African-American culture this week, as the Minneapolis-based Mixed Blood Theatre presents two very different theatrical presentations on the subject.

The Historic Holmes Theatre will present Mixed Blood's one-man show, "Dr King's Dream" on Monday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.

Then on Wednesday; Jan. 25, Mixed Blood's "Daughters of Africa" will be presented in the conference center at Minnesota State Community & Technical College-Detroit Lakes, starting at 3 p.m.

Both performances are free and open to the public; no tickets are required for admission.

"Dr. King's Dream" was written by and stars Warren C. Bowles, who plays Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- a role he has been playing in Mixed Blood Theatre's touring shows in 1981.

This acclaimed production celebrates the life and career of one of America's iconic heroes, in dialogue drawn from King's own letters, sermons, books and speeches.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led American society through some of its most profound changes with passion, devotion, and courage. This powerful biography illuminates why he is recognized as one of the greatest leaders and orators in American history, and why he is honored with a national holiday each January.

"Daughters of Africa," featuring actress Thomasina Petrus, is a music-driven historical production highlighting the triumphs and accomplishments of African American women, written specially for Mixed Blood by award-winning playwright Syl Jones.

The one-woman show, a striking collection of profiles of remarkable women, both famous and forgotten, is fueled by the songs of Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin and Queen Latifah.

Mixed Blood is a professional, multi-racial theatre company based in Minneapolis that promotes cultural pluralism and individual equality through artistic excellence.
