Montoya tosses third no-hitter to help Hornets advance
Frazee senior pitcher Stephanie Montoya's third no-hitter of the season came at a perfect time.
The Frazee Lady Hornets picked up their first win of the Section 8-2A tournament Tuesday with a 9-0 victory over the Staples-Motley Cardinals.
The win ensures Frazee entry into the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Lady Hornets will host three other teams Thursday from the South half of the Section and will face Fergus Falls, which downed Pelican Rapids 5-0.
In the other bracket, Wadena-Deer Creek will face Ottertail Central, with both games at 4 p.m.
After the first round, the four teams will play another at 6 p.m., with the two winners playing and the two losers facing off.
The third round will be in Frazee Saturday, with games starting at 1:30 p.m.
The championship will be Thursday, May 28, at a site to be determined.
The Hornets used some solid hitting and a stellar pitching performance by Stephanie Montoya.
For the game, the Hornets scored nine runs on 11 hits, while Montoya threw a no-hit shutout -- her third no-hitter of the season.
The Hornets were able to score early, as they notched one run in the first and five more in the second to take control of the game.
The Hornets added three more in the fourth to end up with the 9-0 victory.
Offensively, Kari Shipman led the Hornets with three hits. She had a triple, double and single.
Abby Berven also had a big night at the plate with two hits.
The two Lady Hornets were followed by Chelsea Nordquist, Montoya, Jaclyn Mickelson, Desi Gigstead, Chloe Streeper and Sadie Stender, who had one hit apiece for the Lady Hornets.
Defensively, the Hornets committed two errors, but also picked up a double play, as Streeper made a nice catch in right field and threw to first baseman Berven to double off a runner.
