Moore helps Detroit Lakes for first point in debut
It was quite the varsity debut for junior goalie Amanda Moore, who helped the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team to record their first point of the season.
Moore stopped 24 Park Rapids' shot Tuesday in a 3-3 tie, giving DL its first positive step with a 0-5-1 record.
"Amanda did a phenomenal job," said DL head coach Dan Maloney. "The team rallied around her and she did a good, solid job goaltending."
The game was literally back and forth as DL started the scoring in the second period on a Callie Johnson shot off passes by Emily Payne and Emily Raboin.
But the Panthers kept answering each Laker score, with Jessica Gapinski burying assists by Taylor Pachel and McKenna Brand shortly after Johnson's tally.
Hailey Maloney notched her first goal of the season with a helping hand from Raboin, but the Panthers tied the score 2-2 before the second intermission on an Allie Bade score.
The teams exchanged goals in the third with Gapinski recording her second goal of the game, while Raboin tied it up on a power play opportunity, with Alyssa Boyle on the assist.
Each team had four shots in overtime, but to no avail.
"The girls played well with 41 shots on net and at times had some good scoring opportunities," Maloney said. "They created some quality scoring opportunities. But their goalie played a good game, too."
Gaining their first point of the season could be what the Lakers have been looking for to get them over the hump.
"It was a good sign of the determination the girls have been putting in practice," Maloney said. "We saw that in all three periods and the overtime last night."
The Lakers will get a rematch against Sartell Saturday on the road, while they will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday.
